Imprinting in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) refers to the way early life experiences shape our beliefs, behaviours, and emotional responses. The term “imprinting” was originally used in psychology and ethology to describe how animals, especially birds, form strong attachments during a critical early period. From birth to around the age of seven, children absorb information like sponges. They don’t yet have the cognitive filters or critical thinking skills to question what they see, hear, or feel. As a result, the things they experience—particularly repeated events or emotionally charged moments—can leave a deep psychological imprint. These imprints become the foundation for beliefs such as “I’m not good enough,” “I must please others to be loved,” or “The world is unsafe.” While some of these early learnings can be helpful, others can become limiting or even damaging in adulthood.

When we see someone reacting strongly or behaving irrationally, we might recognise the echo of an old imprint being triggered. This awareness allows us to respond with more compassion and clarity, rather than judgment.

By doing this work, we give ourselves the freedom to choose how we live now, rather than being ruled by patterns set in motion long ago.
