Change & Flexibility, Growth & Potential

Pre-Supps looking at Change and Flexibility and Growth & Potential

The person with the most flexibility has the most influence.

This needs to become an affirmation

“The person with the most flexibility in his or her communication has the most influence”.

“The more techniques, language patterns, I memorise and am able to employ in my day to day vocabulary and practice the more influential I become”.

I can say with pride that there was a time when I could walk into any restaurant, fast food place and walk out without making payment, I only stopped when I realised that any discrepancy in cashing up at the end of the day, the poorly paid assistants/servers would have that deducted from their salaries.

However In any system or interaction, the person who can adapt the most will have the greatest influence. Flexibility allows you to adjust your behaviour, language, or emotional state to fit the context and meet others where they are. This is the essence of NLP’s “calibrate and pace” philosophy. In communication, persuasion, leadership, or therapy, rigid approaches are limiting. Flexibility opens doors to creativity, problem-solving, and deeper connection. The more options you have, the more effective you can be.

All Human behaviour follows internal patterns

If what you’re doing isn’t working, do something else.

This is a call to action for behavioural and mental flexibility. If a strategy or approach is yielding poor results, repeating it won’t change the outcome. NLP encourages you to be curious, experiment, and try different techniques until you get the desired result. It aligns with the idea of treating life as a feedback loop. Instead of getting stuck or frustrated, this presupposition invites playfulness and persistence, increasing the likelihood of success and personal satisfaction.

Behind every behaviour is a structure that can be changed.

I sometimes change this to:

“Behind every behaviour there is a positive intention”.

Having worked in Children’s homes, I can tell you that this is one of the hardest pre suppositions to attempt to explain to staff, on the surface who can blame them? after being assaulted and in many cases lashed out by children. Trying to explain to them that behind ever violent behaviour there is still a structure that can be changed and that needs changing.

Human behaviour follows internal patterns—mental strategies, emotional triggers, and habitual responses. NLP holds that by identifying and changing the underlying structure, we can create lasting change. This belief empowers individuals to move beyond “why” and into “how.” For example, rather

than analyzing why someone feels anxious, you might become curious enough to perhaps  explore how they mentally create anxiety, and then help them revise that structure. It’s an action-oriented approach that puts people back in the driver’s seat of their lives.

Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have.

This presupposition overlaps with earlier ones, reinforcing a compassionate view of human behavior. It’s not about excusing harmful actions, but about understanding the context in which they arose. When people are given more supportive environments, better tools, and healing experiences, their behavior improves. This belief invites patience, empathy, and the creation of growth-friendly conditions in therapeutic, educational, and coaching environments.

Change is inevitable.

If you have seen Avengers End game Thanos the Arch villain says I am inevitable and before him in the Matrix Movies, Mr Smith says “It is inevitable”

For NLP it is change the ever changing constant that is inevitable

NLP embraces the reality that change is a constant in life. Whether internal or external, things are always in flux. The key is to become conscious participants in our own evolution. This presupposition encourages adaptability and proactive transformation. It also helps people avoid clinging to outdated strategies or identities. By aligning with change, rather than resisting it, individuals can ride the wave of growth rather than be overwhelmed by it.

But “Caveat Emptor” which from Latin means “Buyer Be aware” if you are to follow this presupposition to become a better version of you who embraces change and is prepared to evolve in the destined pre-determined goal out-comed YOU then be prepared to lose friends and in some cases family in order to reach your dreams.

You cannot not communicate.

If you ever had the bad luck to be married, blame your past lives but this Pre Supp makes perfect sense: Silence is communication sometimes Silence is so loud it’s deafening, silence, body language, or lack of response sends a message. NLP recognizes that communication is continuous and multi-layered. This presupposition increases awareness of non-verbal signals, tone of voice, and unconscious messaging. In relationships, leadership, or therapy, it’s a powerful reminder that everything we do communicates something. Becoming conscious of this dynamic allows us to communicate with more precision, congruence, and impact. Unless your married than you have no chance. Sorry!
